Deadline is reporting that Rodriguez is partnering with producer Alexander Rodnyansky to shoot Machete Kills, the second film in a proposed Machete trilogy. Production is expected to begin this spring.
If you’ll remember, at the end of the first flick, 2010′s Machete, the Mexican folk legend/urban guerilla played by Trejo rode off into the sunset to live a quiet, sexy life with the comely Jessica Alba, which is not a bad way to spend the rest of your days. So what could possibly force Machete out of such a comfortable retirement? No less than the threat of worldwide mayhem, of course.
Machete Kills finds our hero being “recruited by the U.S. government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.”
This sounds like it could set up the “Machete in Space” idea I hoped for way back in December 2010 — an idea which has subsequently been picked up by Rodriguez himself. At Comic-Con last July, Rodriguez announced that the third film of the Machete trilogy will be titled Machete Kills Again … in Space. Now, I’m not saying I’m owed a story credit, but a “thank you” text would be nice. Oh, I forgot. Machete don’t text.
