Argh! In celebration of Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday, it’s All Elvis, All Day on Turner Classic Movies. Essentially, this means I will get nothing done today. Elvis movies are like crack to me. I sit down at 7 am to watch a few minutes of the King and suddenly it’s 4 pm and I’m a drooling, unshaven mess, humming “Rock-A-Hula Baby” while covered in Cheeto dust. It’s not a pretty sight. So, if you’re wondering how this ties to horror, that would be the connection.
Of course, it could be argued that the tie to horror is the horrible films Elvis made. Granted, they’re not all gems (Tickle Me, I’m looking at you), but there are actually some really good movies and performances in the King’s cinematic oeuvre. Jailhouse Rock and King Creole are great “real” flicks, and Girl Happy and Kissin’ Cousins are maybe my favorite guilty pleasures of all time. Mock me if you choose, but I ask you: Who can resist the timeless combination of Elvis and Ann-Margret singing and dancing their way through “Come On, Everybody” in Viva Las Vegas?
